Oak Wilt - When is it safe to prune my trees?

It is safest to prune oaks while they are dormant.  A good rule of thumb is Nov 1st through Spring.   Do Not let anyone prune your oak trees during the growing season!  If a cut must be made for safety be sure to use Pruner Seal.

What is the best tree species to pant? 

There is lot that goes into this,  Location to house, utility wires, roads etc.  I teach right tree for the right place. Try to plant native species to Michigan and try to avoid creating a monoculture.  I will come take a look at your desired planting location and advise best I can.
